Poetic of silence
Giorgio Morandi AND
CHRISTINA VON BITTER
In this exhibition, the works of one of the greatest painters of Classical Modernism, Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), enter into a dialogue with the sculptures of the contemporary artist Christina von Bitter.
Contemplative power and intensity
Through the representation of everyday objects, Giorgio Morandi developed his distinctive style and had a significant influence on the art of the 20th century. In his work, he gives his attention to just a few motifs such as bottles, cans, pots or landscapes with houses. It is through their reduction and simplification that his works gain their contemplative power and quiet intensity.
Beauty and poetic
Christina von Bitter’s mostly white, organically formed sculptures seem fragile with their easily wrinkled paper skin supported on a skeleton of wire. Her poetic and beautiful flying objects, pots, containers, pieces of clothing, musical instruments and houses hail from a wayward, surreal-looking world.
Silence and emptiness
Absence and silence are of central importance thematically for both artists. In his watercolours, Morandi often emphasizes the negative or empty space between the objects depicted. With von Bitter’s sculptures, one’s thoughts always come back to the emptiness of their paper-enclosed cavities.
“Emptiness and silence”, according to the art critic Hanne Weskott, “can be very animated, ... because a person can, with their memory and imagination, transform the absence of something into a presence.” This applies equally to the work of Giorgio Morandi and Christina von Bitter.
