“The exhibition is a surprising journey into contemporary art.”
Augsburger Allgemeine

From two dimension into three dimension
This selection of works by more than 90 artists, from a variety of art tendencies – Constructivism, Pop Art, Conceptual Art, Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Visual Poetry – is an original exploration of the richness of new concepts in sculpture. The specific techniques employed, and the fact that most of the works are printed, enable the artists to develop sculpture and objects in a surprising and stimulating way. The exhibition is a surprising journey into contemporary art.
Surprising variety
The purpose of this exhibition is to investigate the entire field, ranging in form from a single sheet of paper to complex constructions for self-assemblage or works that materialise ready-made, as if by magic, upon opening a book. A multi-faceted, colourful object, visible from various viewpoints like a sculpture in the round, might issue forth from a volume a centimetre thick. Pieces of paper that have been folded and then unfolded, or intaglio prints, or books, all of which, through their form, or by means of various interventions within their form, explore the countless possibilities offered by a material – paper or cardboard – which allows itself to be manipulated by hand, by a knife or by a pair of scissors. Whereas some pieces are conceived in such a way that one or two simple folds, one or two pre-cut or incised lines, give birth to a work that is simple in appearance but nevertheless complex, others have necessitated the employment of sophisticated tools by their conceivers and producers, as is the case with pop-ups.

The works range
from Yaacov Agam to Andy Warhol;
from a simple fold-out by Marc Verstockt to a sophisticated pop-up by Andreas Gursky;
from a three-dimensional invitation card by Cildo Meirelles to a large 'tableau-piège' by Daniel Spoerri;
from a series of paper airplanes by Eduard Bal to a wad of banknotes by Anne & Patrick Poirier;
from a simple folded hat by Robert Filliou to a colourful one by Roy Lichtenstein;
from Gérard Garouste’s puppet theatre to Claes Oldenburg’s ‘Geometric Mouse’;
from a sculpture-book by James Lee Byars to a sculpture constructed from several parts by Julio Plaza and Augusto de Campos.
